People are always talking about how annoying it is that you have to have experience to get a job, but you have to have the job to get experience, so here’s your opportunity to get some experience while doing the stuff you are already doing anyway.

The Black Kids Netwerk is a conglomerate of social media bullshit aimed at tickling the fancies of intelligent black twenty-somethings. Our combined network is over 40,000 followers with tens of thousands of unique hits daily. I am freelancers to join our SOCIAL MEDIA TEAM. This is unpaid for now, but a bunch of people who started with unpaid freelance work for Tumblr just made a shit ton of money last week. I’m not promising that will happen with us, but the experience here will certainly look promising on a resume.

Applicants for these positions are expected to create/aggregate content, grow the userbase, and participate in team-directed initiatives. That all sounds real fucking professional, doesn’t it? Now imagine that shit being on your resume next time you apply for a job.

Requirements:

You must be black (preference will be shown to women, the disabled, non-western blacks, and the queer community)

You must have a reliable cell phone that has texting capabilities

You must be plugged in to current trends

You must be funny

You must be willing to post content (tweets, facebook posts, reblogs, etc.) on a regular basis during peak hours on weekdays, and of course if something fun or important happens on the weekend

Looking at photoshopped images of celebrities scares the fuck out of me as someone who has dealt with and is dealing with an eating disorder/disordered thoughts/terrible self-image/body dysmorphia and recalls thinking that, “oh perfect body” or “body envy, this is what I want too look like”.

I just think of little children, teens, and other people looking at this and feeling as if their own body is wrong in some kind of way. As if they are beautiful for just who they are, and it fucking breaks me.

And I think of brown people and people of color, and the white dominated society we live (and how white is the cultural norm), and I shatter more. It’s like people wonder why this fucked up shit happens, but never thinks to question how they are complicit in it. How their comments/actions/words enforce this negative behavior.

I’m still dealing with fucked up body image and learning to love myself. I’m battling weight loss and doing it properly, and in a way that doesn’t damage my body. I’m battling not punishing myself for eating a cookie or feeling guilty for eating too many tortilla chips.

I’m battling this starvation/binge eating habits I have. I’m trying to come to terms with my body dysmorphia. It’s fucking hard. I’m trying to exercise because I enjoy it and not because I want to make up for eating too much. I want my weight loss to happen in a natural, and healthy way. I want to be in a healthy mind state, and not have my weight/food/fat/exercise stuff rule my brain. It is something I still fight to this day. I’m getting there one day at a time, and it’s hard.

But fuck society. Fuck the media and it’s preset notions of what is beautiful. Fuck white domination. Fuck the lack of all body acceptance. Fuck the body shaming, and the fatphobia. Fuck it all.

Why can’t I just live?

This post is 500 words long, and at the end there is a picture of a truly adorable kitten. If you skip to the end, you are a cheater. And anyway, 43 of the words are in this paragraph, which you’ve already read.

I sometimes talk to people on the internet about white, male, heterosexual, middle-class, cisgender privilege. I don’t do this because I enjoy emotional turmoil, and I don’t do it to seem like a smartypants or show how much better than you I am. I do it because as a white, male, heterosexual, middle-class, cisgendered person I experience unearned privilege every day. I believe this obligates me to do whatever I can to change things.

I can’t give away my unearned privilege, it’s a feature of my identity in this society. People defer to me because of who I am and how I talk. I talk the way I do because of how I was raised. If I said ain’t instead of are not, or axe instead of ask, or if I had dark skin, or if I was a woman, people wouldn’t take me as seriously as they do. That’s a privilege. Everything I’m saying here is backed up by a lot of scientific studies. I know that because I can read. I can read because I’m privileged. And so are you, unless someone is reading this to you, in which case please give them a little side hug for me. They’re doing good work.

Plenty has been written about privilege, much of it is terse and academic, some of it is accessible and fun. Most of it gets ignored by most people who have privilege because, let’s face it, for a privileged person facing a choice between addressing privilege and ignoring it the easy answer is obviously ignoring it. Having the opportunity to do so is a function of the privilege, which is what makes this structure so hard to address. Having the thing makes it hard to see the thing. That doesn’t mean that white people are biologically too stupid to see their privilege: it means that white people are taught from a very young age to see their own racial experience as neutral and invisible.

White people: when was the last time you really thought about your race and how it impacts your life?

Straight people: when was the last time you considered how your sexual orientation changes the way people perceive you?

Upper and middle class people: how often do you worry about being judged as potentially dangerous or criminal because of how often you can afford to do laundry or take a shower?

I’ve only got 54 words left. The world is set up to give some people a leg up and hold other people down. Nobody is doing this on purpose; it’s in the culture and the subconscious ideas passed from one generation to the next. We can change it, but we have to be brave.
